Scot's Pine, Loch Voil

Scot's Pine, Loch Voil

This Scot's Pine grows on a boulder on Loch Voil-side called Bruce's Stone. Local legend has it that Robert the Bruce addressed his followers from the rock while they gathered round prior to the Battle of Bannockburn. The tree, which grows about 20 foot above the rock, is actually around 200 years old. I feel the image needed the setting sun to balance the composition. Without it the image would have been too one-sided. Happily the sun co-operated and the side-lighting on the tree trunk and on the leaves of the birch behind adds a nice touch of warmth.
